Okay, So... About That Publishing Idea...

Alright, Caroline, about that question in the Art Thread? We're sincerely looking into it. If we go through Lulu.com, we're going to have to publish it in two seperate books. For the order to make any kind of sense, we're going to have to order 25. Looks like, if we do it B&W, it'll come out to 363.25 per publishing. So about $726.50 for 25 copies of LS, Book One and Book Two. Which isn't that bad. May take some time, but I wanted a bound copy of it, anyway.

*winces* This is going to hurt my wallet so bad, but I really want this. BAD. Well, guys, if we print these and have fifteen or twenty to give out, would you want them? Is this worthwhile to think about?

Or have I completely lost my mind?

No you are not crazy for wanting to have your story published. Just look at all the time, effort, blood, sweat and tears you put into that epic story. You did a fantastic job and deserve recognition for a job well done. Yes it is expensive. But it is worth it.
Just think, I will spend about that much on Friday and I don't have to leave the barn. The vet is coming here. That is about what it costs to have the annual vaccinations and physical anddental exams on six equines. Two will require blood work so that we can haul them anywhere. The total bill is usually over $700, but my vet gives me a discount because of the quality care mine receive. I just looked up last year's bill, it was $627.00. ouch.

Holy Dear God, Dawn! OMG! Then again, that is a handful of horses. But still... *winces*

It's not a crazy idea, but a dangerous one. Please check in the copywrite laws. I'm not totally sure that you can do that with fanfiction. I personally want a copy of it, but so that you don't get in trouble with lawsuits and such, I would take it in a MSWord document. :-) If you are clear to publish it like you are talking baout, then I would want a copy of it like that also. :-) I'm not sure how much it would cost, but maybe there might be a printing place like Kinkos near you that could just do one or two copies and bind them for you. That might be a more safer (leagally speaking) and cheaper way of doing it.

Actually, someone told me that B has already done it with Deja Vu. I need to check with her personally to know for sure, though. Plus it's self-publishing and we're not selling them, so we're not making a profit off of their characters. A lot of fandoms do things like magazines, so I'm pretty sure we're safe. But just to be safe there, as well, the disclaimer will be on the acknowledgements page.

Don't worry, Mac! We'll cover all of the bases before we do it. *blows kiss*

Just wanted to be sure. I know that some people in other fandoms who have thought about it and then when someone told them about the copywrite laws, they were either at a "duh" moment (because they had forgotten about it) or at a lightbulb moment because they had no idea. :-)

If you do decide to go with Lulu for publishing, I'll gladly take a copy! ^_^

I thought about doing the same for Aftermath, but with just the threat of trouble if they realized what they were printing, I decided to go with a cheaper binding at Staples. :p It's not fancy, but it'll work. Now I just need art/manips for the covers! XD

This is not a crazy idea at all!! But you're right, 700$ is really expensive!! Too bad the copyright don't allow you to sell the copies, because it would have help you and, personnaly, I'm ready to pay my own copy! Imagine, my own LS book!! *woot*

Yes, I used lulu.com, but I also have it set "Direct Access" so that it is not advertised on the site. As I am not really selling it, I doubt anyone will come after it.

Anyway - is there a reason you are not setting it up there and then telling the people who are interested (through Direct Access) to purchase their own copy? I don't think you should feel as if you personally should buy these!

Aww, hon, it sounds like an incredible idea, just wish it weren't sooo expensive. I'd love to have a copy, and I'd love to have the money, too! *meh* Let us know how things work out. *hugs*

I'm confused why you would have to order 25. When I was looking at the site for information on my portfolio I didn't get any impression that you'd have to order more than one copy but maybe I misunderstood how it works.

Another idea you might think about is looking into local printers in your own area if you're thinking about setting it up as an actual fanzine. Though I don't know if they could have it bound like an actual book the way Lulu does. When I printed my portfolio they said they didn't have the capability to bound it like that so i went with a spiral bound instead. However other printers might have that ... But I didn't have to buy multiple copies either - just the one. (Just to give you a reference though - it cost me about $40 bucks and is 16 pages. Mind you it's on heavy card stock (and in full color)( because it's a professional portfolio I use to get freelance and on job interviews. If you use regular paper it wouldn't cost as much. )

Wow, making bound copies of LS? If you can do that, I am SO going to buy a copy, no question about it. You have definitely not lost your mind, love. *hugs*

I would sooooo do this! I don't want y'all thinking you have to purchase a copy for me. I'd be MORE than willing to buy one myself. SERIOUSLY. :D

[identity profile] trekkie6.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, you have lost your mind! But not in wanting your story published. It's an awesome idea. And lol on having to need 2! That's a job well done if you ask me. And I would happily buy one!

What were the prices for color copies?

[identity profile] sean-montgomery.livejournal.com 2008-04-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Heck, I'd probably read it in one night, too...

Just don't force yourself to nickel and dime yourself because of this, though. I mean... you want to move to Asheville, right? Which do you want more?

*knows that sounds like a totally unfair question, but just wanted to help you keep that in mind*

[identity profile] trekkie6.livejournal.com 2008-04-08 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I just thought of the massive beta effort it'd take to find all your typos.

*faints*
