Lol, I only had the chance to listen to the first bit of this before I dash off to work so I'll be back later but I did want to just tell you- it wasn't Lois Lane's last name that I had been mispronouncing- it was yours, Lois Joos. (Although, looking back at my comment I can see I wasn't too clear on that).
*hugs* You are amazing!!!! I so did not expect you to go into that much trouble just for this! I hope I didn't make it seem like you had to, I just found the whole accent thing fascinating and rambled on about it in my usual way.
With the Kala/Kal-El thing (btw- that is a cool way to name a girl after her father), you do say 'Kal-El' different to how we in NZ say it. I actually went and looked up how we sound to the rest of the world (Apparently the 'but we don't sound funny, everyone else does' isn't quite true :P) and it turns out we tend to stretch the 'a' in at the beginning of a word (something apparently known as a 'trap-bath split') so as well as 'Kala' and 'Kal-El' I'm thinking we'd say words like 'bath' and 'grass' differently to you.
The way you thought Kara was said was the way I would have said it as well so I found it interesting that wasn't an American thing but a Smallville thing (although did they change 'Lara' too? because the first way you said Kara is what I assumed Lara rhymed with as well (if that makes any sense). Hope I'm not being a bother here *headdesk*, I just really do find it interesting (I was actually considering taking a short course in linguistics once I go to Uni but I don't know if I'll have time for that with what I really want to do.)
Thank you again! I found this so interesting, I've only ever been in the US for a total of three days before and I wasn't really concerned with studying the accent at the time (I was eleven, we were going to Disneyland, I was preoccupied :P). I don't think there's a phone posting number for NZ (which sucks because I pay for it!) but if I can figure out how the mic on my laptop works I might see if I can do one for you so you know what I sound like (even if I do hate the sound of my own voice *shudder*).
Have I mentioned how awesome you are for doing this?
ROFLMAO, I had no idea you were doing this while we were talking! *giggling*
Sounds like we pronounce Kal-el, Lois Lane, and Kala the same way. I've never quite decided how to pronounce Kara (k-rah or car-ah), but I guess Smallville has decided that for everybody. BTW, I love your accents. :D
I also wondered how to pronounce your last name, though I didn't realize that was what Grace was referring to. Anissa said it so quickly in the podfic that I've forgotten by now. :P
Lol, I always thought is was pronounced exactly how it looked- Joos, with a long 'o' sound, but when Anissa said it it sounded more like 'Jose' (ad I'm assuming Anissa would know). In my original comment though I said something like 'apparently I've been saying Lois' last name wrong' which did sound a bit like I meant lois Lane :P.
Laurel and I are adjusting it even as we speak. Since Ms. Kat had to drop out, Ms. Graphics is helping me finish the project. I just hope Kat doesn't hate me. *hides*
Hehe, that gave me a bit of a shock because I was looking at one of your entries then I clicked on another and I thought it was the wrong one- then I was like 'ahhh, that's what's going on' I like it btw.
