You cheap, money-grubbing bastards.
I wash my hands of you once and for all if any of these rumors are true. I'm so sickened by all of this that I have no words. I think a part of me died inside to see what you're doing to this franchise and the fact that you are willing to stoop so low as to reboot a reboot rather than use your brain to find a plausible way to marry what the current canon is with what you want the frachise to achieve. And make it darker? WTMFH!?! He's not dark! What, because it worked for Batman, you're going to try it with a character that has always been the light of the DCU?
That said, know that you WILL NOT get a red cent of my money on the project. As far as I'm concerned, SR will be the end of the line for me. The Reeveverse and SR will remain my canon and God bless Brandon and Bryan for their vision. I will not let you ruin this series for me.
Thank God, Little Secrets didn't depend on an SR sequel, although it breaks my heart that we'll never see how that series would have ended.
No love (and more than enough bitter disgust),
Me
ETA: After reading your entry on it,
saavikam77, I'm making an effort to believe that maybe it was miscommunication between the interviews. Nevertheless, if the rumors are true, I know where I stand.
ETA II: For those still posting comments on this thread, I will be replying. It's just that I'm trying to get my head together enough to not act like a psycho and fan the flames too much. I'm trying to get my faith back that they won't completely gut the film. *takes deep breath*

Date: 2008-08-23 03:40 am (UTC)But everyone is just so quick to dismiss him, the rest of the cast (Meaning Spacey not Bosworth. I agree she needs to be recast or she has to bring her A-game) and the movie as a whole. Okay, I agree that somewhere down the line Bryan Singer screwed up but everyone deserves another chance.
It's just such a disrespect to the fans to do this and to make him darker... darker? Superman isn't dark. That's the point of him. It's one of the things I like about him. Yes, his parents died saving him but he wasn't witness to some horrible murder that scarred him for life thus forcing him to see justice/revenge whatever. No, I'm not digging at Batman. Okay maybe I am. But Superman has always been my hero. I never enjoyed the Burton!Verse movies, (Michael Keaton doesn't sell Bruce Wayne to me) my only comic exposure to Batman has been Supes/Batman as well as the JLA and like everyone I've just started in Nolan!Verse and TAS which is cool.
But with Superman there is no incarnation I don't love. No actor portraying a Superhero has ever affected the world like Christopher Reeve. He made the world believe a man could fly. So when SR came along we did have to disregard 3 and 4 which was hard but we did it because we love the character and wanted to embrace him. This... this is too much. You're right hun, this is money grabbing at its lowest. But still the world will turn out to see it because we love Superman.

Date: 2008-08-23 04:05 am (UTC)And what's this about recasting Brandon? wtf, people? He was the best part of the whole movie!! (apart from perhaps Spacey, he was pretty awesome)
And darker!?!? Have these people not read the comics at all?!?
...I need to go hit something

Found the GIF.
Date: 2008-08-23 05:26 am (UTC)Yeah. That's my feeling too. I just do NOT understand why they feel they have to make Superman into Batman - the two are completely different characters.
WB is already on my shit list.

Date: 2008-08-23 10:39 am (UTC)I really really do NOT like this "darker" thing, and I'm really confused because one of the critisisms of SR was that it was too sombre, and they wanto go darker???!! wtf?!
Leave dark to Batman please. That's his thing and he does it well. What's wrong with these asshats? *rage metre reaching overload*
I'll be pleased to see Kate Bosworth go, but I'm worried who'll they cast instead. I just don't trust them to cast a decent actress.
Seems like this franchise is doomed :(

Date: 2008-08-23 01:53 pm (UTC)Dark ?? it's not what Superman is. Batman is an entirely different character, comes from an entirely different place. They are not the same, people! Wake up...
Continue what Singer started. As you said, Superman can be strong, defiant, even revengeful, up to a point. But he's not going to be a vigilante, going around hurting people and taking the law into his own hands. Come on... that would be so wrong. They must know this!!
I don't have to read a comic to know this is true. Unbelievable..! *furious* No way would I spend another dime of another reboot! It's insane!!

Date: 2008-08-23 04:27 pm (UTC)I think if it were true we'd get an official word from Bryan Singer because a couple of months ago he said himself that the sequel was still on. So I call shenanigans, and think there's alot of negativity surrounding it because of all the rabid fanboys. Tell them to stfu and gtfo already!
/hope! We'll get an official word soon, I'm sure. a GOOD word

Date: 2008-08-23 06:53 pm (UTC)It also seems like the MTV generation has forever changed the way movies and television are made. Everything has to be darker and edgier. No longer are heroes allowed to be heroes. All must be flawed in some way, shape or form. Heroes have to be troubled and conflicted. Things must be blown up. There must be a lot of action or the MTV reared viewer loses interest. Such qualities as love, honor, integrity and respect are all pushed to the side in favor of the shoot/blow em up attitude. Superman needs to be above all of that. He needs to be like Atticus Finch, a man of quiet dignity and soft spoken words. A true leader of the people. The light to show us the way. After all, we are a great people. We wish to be.

Now, I'm gonna go hit something.

Date: 2008-08-25 06:50 am (UTC)For the love of Superman and the future of its franchise, please keep Bryan Singer & Brandon Routh on board. Also, please the keep the John Williams’ theme (Much better, hire him to provide additional musical score for the next installment.). From an intellectual standpoint, it would not have been creatively challenging at all if Bryan Singer & company did a reboot from scratch (But to start the film's plot from where Superman The Movie & Superman 2 have left off was just pure genius -- something intelligently unpredictable that only a few people would have thought of). And the decision to cast Brandon Routh was no mistake at all. We all love & respect Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman. We can't think of anyone else worthy of carrying on the legacy that Christopher Reeve has left to the Superman franchise, not until Brandon Routh came along. As for the character of Lois Lane, we do not object to a recast. (Maybe you should take more time and care in finding a better actress more suited to play the role. Just keep in mind the painstaking effort and process they went through in the 1970’s before casting Reeve & Kidder.)
WB please learn from the past (Just imagine how many brilliant Superman movies we could have had with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, if only Richard Donner & Tom Mankiewicz remained as the creative guardians of the franchise.) Superman Returns may not have had so many action scenes that majority of other typical mediocre movies have today, but its collective scenes whether dramatic, comedic or fast-moving make one exceptional film that engages both mind & heart. Bryan Singer did the right thing in anchoring the plot of his film from what was already established by the Donner/Reeve version which would always remain the classic standard to which all Superman reincarnations would be compared to. WB, you do not need to reboot the film. Please don’t shrink away from the challenge of creating a sequel to Superman Returns that would resolve the questions left unanswered by the film and could only be addressed by a continuity stemming from it. Donner & Reeve were able to bring such magic to the big screen in the late 1970’s, and so will Singer & Routh if only you let them continue what they started.
WB, if it’s monetary rewards that you’re concerned about, deviating from the true essence of Superman to suit today’s craving for unintelligent/mtv-inspired dark material would probably earn you profit, but it would be short-lived. It’s the standard classics that prove to be persistently successful in the long run. (Just look at the video/dvd sales you’ve made with the Donner/Reeve version of Superman.). It would be great to add more breathtaking action scenes in the next Superman film, but in doing so you need to maintain an intelligent script where all aspects of wit, adventure, romance and conflict all compliment each other. Superman is not all about dark nonsensical violence & cynicism. Superman is all about integrity, intelligence, genuine goodness, love, hope, resilience and perpetual morality prevailing even in the worst of situations – the magic formula which keeps us in awe & makes us all feel good and hopeful when we are witnessing his iconic adventures whether they be on comic books, fanfiction, television or on film.
With all that said, we sincerely re-affirm our petition: No to a Superman reboot. Yes to a Superman Returns sequel.
